GoWonder City Guide | Nha Trang – Vietnam

Today let’s follow
Elise to Nha Trang – Vietnam.

Getting Around

The city sprawls back from the beach so a lot of it is walkable along the promenade. If you want to go a little further, taxis or moto taxis (day time only) are recommended.

Must Try Food In Nha Trang

There is a brewery right on the beach – The Louisiane Brewhouse. You can get lovely samplers of craft beer, sat right by the ocean.

Nha Trang is also known for its sea food.

Must Try Restaurant In Nha Trang

Omar’s Indian restaurant. You won’t be disappointed! He has a ‘special menu’ for about $5, excellent service and the best Indian food we’ve had in a long time.

Must Try Cafe In Nha Trang

Local gem – the seafood sellers on the beach. Walk up and down the beachfront until you find a local BBQer with a tarpaulin. He’ll grill you fresh lobster, crab, langoustines and scallops for a few dollars. Some of the best (and cheapest) seafood we’ve ever eaten!

What is Nha Trang known for?

Vinpearl is a giant island across from Nha Trang, accessed via a cable car. It’s a custom built water/adventure park and well worth a visit! The rides are all a lot of fun, it’s usually pretty quiet (avoid Vietnamese national holidays) and there is an Alpine Coaster which is a two person carriage that whizzes across the island at your own speed.

There is also a decent beach for those not interested in the water rides.

Top 3-5 places to check out in Nha Trang?

Visit the mud baths! A short taxi ride away from the main town, and the best time to visit is mid/late afternoon when it cools down a little. The mud baths are room temp, but there is hot springs at the end that can only be enjoyed in the cool season or the evening – midday would be way too hot! There are different sized baths to accomodate small and larger groups.

Nearby Cham ruins are worth a visit, especially if you haven’t just come from Cambodia.

A massage or beauty treatment at one of the many beauty parlours nearby, or on the beach!

Must Try Activities in Nha Trang?

There are several nearby islands (nature reserves) that you can visit for diving and snorkelling.

Night life in Nha Trang

The bars along the beach are nice, although a little more upmarket than in the town. The Sailing Club is a great venue for some early evening drinks, and transforms into a giant party on the beach later on.

Accommodation in Nha Trang

The roads surrounding the hospital have many good budget hostels. Most will give the best rates on the day, in person so it’s good to just turn up and haggle if you are backpacking. Be aware that Nha Trang is a local holiday destination and will be extremely busy on any national holidays, so make sure you aren’t visiting then! (or book in advance!)

Female Travellers Safety Tips For Nha Trang

Unfortunately Nha Trang is one of the more dangerous Vietnamese cities for theft & pickpockets, but don’t let that put you off! It’s all opportunist theft so be careful and you should be absolutely fine. Do not take valuables to the beach, or out on nights out with you. Particularly on the beach, keep your possessions wrapped around you at all times! Keep phone/money in denim shorts rather than carrying a handbag.

Places to avoid – “Why Not” bar in the town is rife with pickpockets, so avoid if possible, or be very aware of your belongings.

What to do in an emergency?

If you are robbed then report it to the police straight away. You’ll need to take someone who speaks Vietnamese (try asking at your hotel) and pay the fees, but you’ll need this to claim on your insurance so make sure you do it (usually within 24-48 hours for your insurance to be valid)

Emergency numbers: 113 (police) 114 (fire) 115 (medical)

Additional Tips

The supermarket here sells very reasonably priced boxes of wine! For those of you travelling long term, you’ll know wine is a bit of a luxury unless you have a big budget. Lots of the restaurants (including the seafood stall on the beach, just sayin’) will let you bring it in with you too!
